Music of the Wednesday – Grand History (La-Mulana)

Bet you guys can’t guess what I’ve been playing lately/the reason I didn’t post anything yesterday.

If you’ve never played La-Mulana, well, go play it. I think the original version’s still up for download and the remake is much better. Anyway, I’ve sank countless hours (and countless ragequits) into this thing and I’ve never found a song that hit me harder than this.

For those of you who don’t know, Grand History is the background music for the Mausoleum of the Giants. Throughout the Mausoleum, you find stone tablets detailing how the Giants broke up into two factions: One faction wanted their Mother to return to the sky, one wanted her to stay with them on Earth. The Giants eventually killed each other off one by one, with the exception of Zeb, who couldn’t move due to holding up the world.

As you read the tablets, you find out how sad the history of this once-great people is. Throughout a series of puzzles, you even see specific moments in time, such as one Giant falling dead right in front of you or another kneeling in prayer.

Grand History really helps capture an ancient, once-great feeling. In several parts, the song sounds mournful. In others, it tries to live up to some grand, majestic tone. You don’t really get the full effect of the song without actually reading the tablets and seeing the different time periods, so I highly recommend going and playing the game.

Anyway, I’ll try to be back later today with an actual review of the La-Mulana remake. As always, thanks for reading and have a good’un.
