I’ve always loved human history. In the roughly half-million years we’ve been around in some form, it’s crazy to think how far we’ve come. In a relative (to the universe) blink of an eye, we’ve gone from living in crude huts or caves to walking on other celestial bodies. Now… why can’t we have something like this in Minecraft?
Yeah, I know. Ideas are cheap as hell, but I’ve been thinking about this way too much to not write about it. Imagine, if you will, a mod that allows you to progress through the ages. Start off in the stone age, all hunter-gatherer like, then keep going and going until you hit modern or near-futuristic times. And imagine if your choices had an impact on the world. Say you hunt all the cows back in the stone age? They ain’t coming back, so if you want some milk or a cake, you’re gonna have to migrate for that nonsense.
Maybe, just maybe, even include some kind of real progression system. Something like Thaumcraft’s Research mechanic, except you could break down tools of a higher quality/age (Let’s say you find a village that’s better off than you and your group) and slowly learn how to make that kind of stuff. Maybe you could even discover things that the other villages or towns haven’t; you’re inventing things now, and they’ll use that tool if they get one.
And, since this is all just an idea likely to never happen anyway, why stop there? Why not add branching paths? Maybe you reject the ‘magic’ of the Nether and End, and focus strictly on scientific discoveries. Magic becomes off-limits or harder, but eventually you may be able to explore space! Or vice-versa, in which the magical knowledge of your people opens the way to another world like the Aether.
Hell, with all of this kind of stuff, it doesn’t even have to be a Minecraft mod. Someone could very well make a brand new game out of this concept (and I would love you forever if you did). The idea of going through the ages and making choices that affect the world… Damn, that sounds cool.
Anyway, just wanted to get that out there and hopefully dislodge this writer’s block I’ve been having. I may come back tomorrow since I’ve been away for a lot this week, but no promises. Anyhoo, thanks for reading and have a good’un.
