First Impressions – Tribes: Ascend (Closed Beta)

Heyo~ I’m one of Myschi’s good friends, and this’ll be my first post here, so go easy on me. I’m here to talk about a little free-to-play FPS currently in beta called Tribes: Ascend.

Unlike most FPSes these days, this game is extremely fast paced, mostly thanks to its unique movement system called “skiing”. Basically, you have a pair of anti-grav boots that allow you to move without friction, on any surface. Combine this with your jetpack and you can get up to speeds well above 200km/h. All of the maps are designed around this, being very large with lots of big hills and few obstacles. This makes for some of the fastest combat in any FPS that I’ve ever played.

This game uses a class-based system, with each class having their own unique weapon loadouts and such. This is all well and good, except for one thing: you have to buy the classes, either with in-game tokens that you earn or gold that you buy with real money. I find this kind of odd, because I thought the whole point of the class-based system was to have clearly defined roles for players, and essentially locking people out of playing the lighter or heavier classes doesn’t really make much sense to me. The prices for the classes are pretty crazy too, most classes being 9800 tokens, and you only earn around 100-150 tokens for a 15-minute game if you win, and as low as 50 if you lose.

As for modes, you have your standard Team Deathmatch, a mode called “Rabbit” where you have to hold a flag for a certain amount of time to win (a bit like Oddball from Halo), but the real action is in the Capture the Flag mode, which has you attacking or defending not only your flag, but also radar sensors, turrets, and the main generators that power them. When you get a 32 player CTF game going, it’s some crazy shazbot.

All-in-all, this game is fun, fast and can be incredibly chaotic. I would recommend it to anyone that likes FPSes, especially people that played the old Tribes or things like Quake III/Live. You can sign up for the free closed beta here. If you’re selected, you’ll also get two extra keys to give to your friends! Did I mention that it’s free? And awesome? Yeah.

    Hey a new writer :)
Sounds like you need to play a lot to earn that many tokens. It’s kind of dodgy and seems like the good player would unlock the good stuff first and then become even harder to kill.

Not really, in fact the classes seem to be quite balanced; there’s no really super-powerful classes or ones that have completely unstoppable weapons, which means it makes even less sense to have to unlock them :\

Now that’s dodgy, unlocking those weapons should give you an edge over your opponent even if it is only a little bit. It always happens like that, you put in a lot of time but the reward is never worth it.

Well, there are different abilities and such that come with the new classes that can be useful. For example, the Technician has an automatic sentry that he can deploy, but it seems to go down in one direct hit with the spinfusor. Really, all of the classes can be effectively countered like in most class-based games like this.
